Don't Say Yes When You Want to Say No Making Life Right When It Feels All Wrong Herbert Fensterheim Jean Baer 9780440154136 Books Reviews
- Lots of great tidbits in here, and some great social experiments to perform. However, the material feels very dated (*cough* 1975 *cough*). I guess it must be because I was born after it was written, but the whole chapter about homosexuals being sexual deviants, and transgender people being "sad, desperate people" shows the book's age.
I get it, 1975 was a very different time. But in a book that is supposed to encourage assertiveness, it is weird that they promote a lot of tactics to try and convert people to become heterosexual, or try to lose their transgender identity. Or the fact that they spent a whole chapter on it.
I mostly glossed over it, and found a lot of the other topics to be quite helpful, like learning how to be assertive in the workplace as well as in your personal relationships. - Mandatory reading for any woman who wants to get ahead or just feel good about how she is treated. Read this book eons ago and practiced in front of a mirror saying NO/certain phrases to requests that made me feel weak or uncomfortable or used. I went from a shy, take-what's-leftover-from-the-feast kind of person to someone who says what she means, makes sure she is heard and then reaps the benefits of the respect she has earned. When you allow people to "walk all over you", they eventually learn to resent you for being so easily manipulated. I have purchased this book for MANY friends and every one of the them felt it was transformative in their careers and personal lives. This is an old book. I AM SO GLAD IT IS STILL BEING PUBLISHED.
- This book has changed my life. I was faced with a crisis where I felt that I never had enough time, partially because I could never say no to people. This book will help you get along better with your mate, your friends, and help with goal setting. One of the most lifechanging texts I have ever read!
- Excellent !!
- This book is a great read for anyone interested in assertiveness, communication, understanding the dynamics of behavior, and other things!!
- Excellent
- This book arrived but it was very old, with yellowed pages and a musty smell. The pages seem delicate and about to fall out of the binding. Not one of the best books purchased.
- This is a great book for comprehension of assertiveness training. Easy to understand and useful insights. Better than other assertiveness books I could find.
