- This book is just what the highly sensitive person needs to reach a new understanding of themselves and how they function in our world. - This book does a wonderful job of helping HSPs see themselves and their traits described accurately but then go on to view themselves in a different light. They can see themselves as creative, thoughtful, empathetic, fully feeling versus the "too sensitive" or "too quiet" many of us grew up labelled. They can also see that being different than the rest of the 80% of the population in no way makes them lesser. The book gives insights on just how HSPs are different and what that means in terms of what they need to tolerate challenges and thrive in a non-HSP focused world.
Then the book goes on to give dozens and dozens of tips and ideas on how to use your HSP talents, how to take care of yourself, how to protect yourself from your natural inclination to care too quickly for others and too slowly for yourself. I suggest keeping a list or highlighting sections as there are so many good ideas, big and small, that each HSP needs to sort through and pick the ones that best suit them to integrate and refer back to often. Because, yes, we can be fully empowered in this chaotic world, especially with the help of resources like this! - When I saw Elaine Aron recommended this book I knew I had to read it and I’m so glad I did! I feel like I just read an owners manual about how my brain works! For the first time I feel understood and to know other people experience life the way I do already makes me feel better about myself. It turns out Julie Bjelland specializes in highly sensitive people and has so much insight into our unique brain differences. I feel her caring presence through the whole book too. I’m practicing the techniques and they are working! I love that she teaches us about how to say no without guilt and advocate for our needs and how to talk to our doctor about the trait. You can even see what stage of empowerment you are in and work toward the higher stages throughout the book. There are so many good things in this book that I have highlighted something on almost every page to come back and read again and again. I love that she’s an HSP too so she gets it. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!
