"I was very happy to learn that IDW decided to extend its Rip Kirby line into the John Prentice era. Volume 4 had some Prentice as he finished up the storyline Raymond was working on at the time of his death; this volume is all Prentice. Prentice was the perfect choice to continue the strip.
That said, the stories in this volume, while well written and entertaining, lack some of the raw emotion seen in previous volumes. There is none of the viciousness of the Mangler and the raw sex appeal of Pagan Lee is absent as well. We do get the "girl next door" wholesomeness of Honey Dorian and the creepy sliminess of Silk Carter, however. I wonder if there was some current editorial direction to tone things down a bit? No hint of that in the introduction though.
Two of the stories in this volume touch on supernatural themes. These seem a little out of place in a strip noted for realism over the fantastic. Also, Desmond continues to play the buffoon in this volume. This seems out of character and unnecessary. Desmond had been established as much more worldly by this time.
There is an excellent introduction featuring fine insights into Prentice's life and times with reminiscences by his friend and fellow cartoonist Leonard Starr. There is also a fine selection of Prentice's other artwork.
Highly recommended. I hope this volume does well enough to warrant some more."

- Rip Kirby by John Prentice 1857-1959
A new artist and writer picks up after the death of Alex Raymond and the pace does fall off. Rip is still the educated sleuth that shows a debonair charm while being able to shot and slug it out with the bad guys. And he somehow attracts various damsels in distress or seeming distress. Rip has to keep a close eye on some of them. And faithful Desmond even gets the spotlight a few times, once being swindled and then becomes a swindler himself. Prentice continues to use a variety of angles in the strip, as Raymond did. His artwork, including, as the older generation might say the cheese cake shots, is very well done. The action is shown from various sides of the scenes. Where Raymond and Prentice are different than other strips, there is not the daily recap, the kind which informed readers who missed the strip for a few days in the paper, but the kind a reader of the collected work grows tired of. Here the stories flow but a few weeks into each story there is a one panel recap and then back to the action. And there is plenty of action. No color, Kirby did not do a Sunday strip, dailies only! I will start saving for the next volume in the series! - I wasn't originally planning to purchase additional IDW Rip Kirby purchases beyond the four Alex Raymond volumes. But I'm very glad I did. I had forgotten how good John Prentice was. I always liked his comic book work, and he takes it to a new level with Rip. It must have been daunting to step in for the legendary Raymond under such difficult circumstances (death by auto accident). Prentice shows no letdown at all. In my opinion, he not only builds on what Raymond did...he improves on it. This fat volume presents Prentice's first work on Rip Kirby from late 1956 through mid-1959. And he continued to be the creative force behind the strip for another four decades.
IDW has produced several other excellent series offering classic newspaper strips. I have their Terry and the Pirates series as well as all their Little Orphan Annie volumes to date. And after this Prentice volume I am ready to sign on for as many Rip books as IDW wants to publish. - The appearance of this volume has the nature of a promise kept in my mind. As much as I admire Alex Raymond's work, including his effort in creating Rip Kirby, I grew up with John Prentice at the helm of this classic strip. The stories in this volume actually predate my reading of it in the 1960s, and so I'm quite grateful that the Kirby series is apparently going to extended to the very end, allowing us to savor Prentice's stories and art. In taking over from Raymond, Prentice did the seemingly impossible keep the same general visual aesthetic while putting his own brand on it. Highly recommended.
- Meaning no disrespect to Alex Raymond but I've always felt John Prentice's take on Rip Kirby was superior. Like others have mentioned, I too grew up on Prentice's version of the bespectacled criminologist and his valet Desmond. RIP KIRBY VOLUME 5 brings back priceless memories of me as a 9-year-old boy sprawled on my grandmother's kitchen floor reading the funnies in 1962 and discovering Prentice's artwork for the first time. I'd never encountered crosshatching and chiaroscuro style inking before. I recall thinking I wished I could draw half as well as Prentice (still do). RIP KIRBY VOLUME 5 is handsomely bound and packaged, the artwork is brilliant, the story plots varied and exciting. I will certainly buy every volume of Prentice's Rip Kirby IDW publishes and hope they print every strip he ever did. Hats off, Mullaney, Canwell & crew; let 'em rip!

- John Prentice took over this feature after Alex Raymond died and carried on in style. The story is by the same writer who crafted words for Raymond, so there is no change in quality there. Recommended for fans of great newspaper comics.
