MATLAB For Beginners A Gentle Approach Peter I Kattan 9781438203096 Books Reviews
- Overall I like the book. It does a pretty good job of working you into Matlab for calculation and analysis. In the end it is a gentle introduction into using Matlab without really giving any in-depth instruction on how to specifically apply it. In that regard it is exactly what it claims to be. Still, think money would have been better spent on a larger book.
I really didn't enjoy the significant content around the "symbolic math toolbox". That's a very specific item that I don't foresee many book buyers having. So before you buy it expect a quarter of the book content to be useless to you. I also found the font size to be ridiculously large. It's very easy to read, but for the number of pages contained in the book you're probably getting 2/3 of the content you expect. Lastly, half the book is the answer to the in-chapter exercises. If you've never ever used Matlab before you can read through the chapters and attempt the exercises and finish the whole thing in two days. Being somewhat familiar with Matlab as the base onto which Simulink operates, I was able to run through the entire thing in an 8 hour work day. - This is a good "fast start" text on MATLAB. After using this for several weeks I decided I wanted a more complete reference and bought "Matlab, Second Edition A Practical Introduction to Programming and Problem Solving" (see review) that I find more useful as my skills increase. That being said, I'm very happy I bought this introductory text because it got me going with less pain than I would have endured with a more detailed text.
- I think that this book is an excellent first book on MATLAB. The text alternates between about 3-4 pages of text and 2 pages of exercises. So you read how to do something and then do exercises, with answers in the back of the book. It probably takes about 8 h to do the reading + exercises. At the end of that time you have the basics of MATLAB. Almost every section has a subsection on symbolic math. There is no section on importing or exporting files, or on manipulating images, but maybe these are advanced topics.
- Goes over the basic functions. Gentle approach is an appropriate title. Thought it was probably too gentle. Would have liked to a have seen some more advanced topics
- Great product, timely delivery!
- Perfect and as described!
- This is a short version of the Matlab introduction. If you want to know Matlab from start, this is an excellent book that leads you step-by-step through the learning process from simple algebra to programming. Just as what the title said, it is a gentle approach to learn Matlab.
- Better than some other books
