Read A Beginner Guide to Living in an RV Everything I Wish I Knew Before FullTime RVing Across America eBook Alyssa Padgett
When my husband and I started full-time RVing, we knew nothing about RV living. We made it up as we traveled to all fifty states, constantly googling things like "how to RV" and "what is boondocking?" Meanwhile, we flooded the bathroom, took ice cold showers, and got stuck in the mud.
Now, we've been full-timing for over three years and we've learned the ins and outs of RVing America.
In this guide, I answer all of the most common questions we receive about RV living, from how to choose the right RV to how we get mail on the road, to how to find free camping.
This guide is for anyone exploring the RV lifestyle and looking for RVing books to help make the transition easier. Also, because I want to make sure this book is valuable for you, below you can see a few specific areas of RVing I cover.
A few topics I cover in the guide
- How to find great internet on the road
- The costs of full-time RVing
- Whether or not to tow a car behind your RV
- What we do for health insurance while traveling
- The best RVing clubs and memberships
- Our favorite apps for RVers
A few topics I DON'T cover, since I have zero experience in these areas, are
- Traveling with kids
- How to downsize to an RV from a house
- How to travel with pets
Transitioning to living on the road was the best decision my husband and I could have ever made. RVing has improved our marriage and our life together, and we've seen more of America than we could have ever imagined.
While this book isn't about our story or why you should travel, it will be a useful tool as you find yourself asking a million different questions about what it's like living in an RV.
Oh, and don't forget to use the #RVlife on Instagram once you start traveling. That's what all the cool kids do.

"Earlier this year, my husband and I decided we would sell our home and live in an RV. It sounded crazy and totally against the norm, but we've always wanted to travel so, why not?! We hadn't met anyone who had done this so we went to the interwebs to see if this was feasible option. My husband found Heath & Alyssa's blog which was a game changer for us. We found tools and encouragement to get it done! We went for it and purchased our rig and couldn't be happier about our decision, even influencing my parents to get a rig of their own. Alyssa's book takes it to a whole other level. This book is a MUST if you're an RVer, are thinking about becoming an RVer or even if you have someone in your life that doesn't understand this whole full-time RV thing. She covers everything from before you get your RV to when you hit the road. This is such a complete guide. As newbie RVers, we will definitely be using this as we get ready to hit the road. Thank you, Alyssa for writing this. It's perfect!"

A Beginner Guide to Living in an RV Everything I Wish I Knew Before FullTime RVing Across America eBook Alyssa Padgett Reviews
- Two and a half years ago, we decided we wanted to live and travel in an RV . . . full-time. That thought alone was crazy enough, but then we had to figure out how to make it happen. If only this guide was available then, but it kinda was.
We came across a crazy young couple doing exactly what we were planning. Alyssa and her husband were the first ones to share their RVing experience with us, answering tons of questions that we had before we hit the road.
Fast forward, and Alyssa has put together an incredible guide for those looking to embark on full-time RV travel. All the important How’s and What’s are covered in this book how to purchase an RV, how to receive mail, what are all the buttons for, and much more.
This book is easy to read, contains some hilarious anecdotes, and is extremely practical . . . everything you could want from an RV guide. - Earlier this year, my husband and I decided we would sell our home and live in an RV. - I'm a 42-year-old, self-employed single guy who has always dreamed of owning and living full-time in an RV. I've always pictured it as something I'd do in the distant future (retirement, etc.), but lately I've been thinking, why put off until tomorrow what I can do today?
I purchased this book as one of my first steps in turning this dream into a reality, and it turned out to be just the kind of helpful, practical, and inspiring beginner's guide that I'd hoped it would be. The writing style is simple and conversational, almost like you're texting back and forth with a good friend. This makes it a very quick and easy read that is also packed full with lots of substantive information and fun, useful tips.
I would have liked a more detailed, step-by-step guide to filling and emptying the RV's water and waste tanks, hooking everything up at RV parks, etc. But otherwise this was a very entertaining and educational read that will no doubt continue to serve as a handy guide for many months and years to come. - I am going into RVing full time with little to no knowledge on the subject but am feeling almost completely prepared after having read this book. She really covers all the bases with this one, it's so worth the money even if you're just curious about the lifestyle. Informational books are pretty difficult for me to get through usually but this one presents the information in an entertaining way, read the whole thing in less than two weeks.
- I'm not really a beginner. I've been buying and living in camping trailers for about 40 years. Pop-ups, truck campers, trailers, and -- for the last 15 or so -- motorhomes. I spend time on forums trying to help people with questions, but will now just send them a link to Alyssa's book. She's managed to cover just about every single major question I get asked. (And yes, "How do you get your mail?" is #1.) I usually tell people mail is brought to my rig by squirrels, and walk quietly away. We live in a 35' motorhome full time, and work as camp hosts -- so we're always getting questions about the life.
It's really neat to see someone addressing the constant questions and standing up to say "This is the answer." Most books like this just list off a series of possibilities, and confuse the reader even more. I like that it is written with spirit and a youthful flair -- seeing "smh" in the first few pages told me that this wasn't going to be a dry and boring read. I'd recommend this book for both newbies and us oldbies -- there's lots here I didn't know, and several things that gave me a new perspective. Very nice job for a first outing. - I have to admit that while we were contemplating making the leap to full-time RV life, I spent most of my time saving RV pins on Pinterest or mooning over fabulous Instagram photos, leaving my husband to deal with most of the actual research.
If this book had come out a year ago, I might've quit dreaming and started learning. Still, it's valuable insight I'm glad the author shared. We did get an RV, but haven't yet graduated to full-time life (soon, though!!!). I learned a lot from the book, and it was an enjoyable read.
Unlike most of the RV books hubby bought D
The author is knowledgeable, experienced, sassy, opinionated and at times pretty damn funny. This makes what might otherwise be a fairly mundane topic a pleasure to read.
I dinged my rating by a star because of minor editing lapses near the end, and because she presents a few of her preferences as fact rather than a choice based on ones circumstances. But it's such a great guide for newbs like me that I wish would let me give it 4.5 stars. - I LOVE Alyssa Padgett's comprehensive and entertaining way of explaining all the variables of RV life. She's really knowledgeable about everything from purchasing an RV, maintenance, and even community on the road. She's funny too! This isn't just a dry read of facts; she's a great story teller and captures your imagination of what's possible living in an RV, touring the country, and embracing adventure!
